Dudley District Explorers Complete Life‑Changing Expedition to Kandersteg International Scout Centre
Twenty‑five young people and five adult volunteers from Dudley District Explorers have returned from an unforgettable expedition to Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) in Switzerland — a trip years in the making and packed with challenge, adventure and international friendship.
Travelling entirely by train, the group embraced a sustainable and low‑carbon journey across Europe, arriving in the Swiss Alps ready for a week of high‑adrenaline activities and once‑in‑a‑lifetime experiences.
A Week of Alpine Adventure
During their time at KISC, the Explorers took part in a demanding and diverse programme, including:
- Natural rock face climbing on the steep alpine cliffs
- A guided glacier walk, learning first‑hand about ice movement and mountain safety
- An overnight stay in a remote mountain hut, reached by a challenging ascent
- A full‑day high‑altitude hike through breathtaking alpine scenery
- White‑water rafting on fast‑flowing glacial rivers
- Daily international activities, games and campfires with Scouts from across the world
The group also immersed themselves in KISC’s unique culture, making international friends from dozens of countries and experiencing the global spirit of Scouting that the centre is famous for.
Years of Planning and Leadership
This ambitious expedition was made possible thanks to the dedication of the leadership team — Jon, Chris, Ted, George, Brandon and Anna — who spent years planning logistics, safety, fundraising, training and programme development to ensure every Explorer could take part in a safe, challenging and rewarding adventure.
Their work demonstrates what Dudley’s Explorer units can achieve when they collaborate, share resources and support one another.
Over £7,000 Raised Through Community Fundraising
The trip was supported by an incredible £7,000+ raised by the young people themselves. Fundraising efforts included:
- A hugely successful New Year bonfire event
- A district quiz night
- A community meal evening
- Dozens of letters written to charities, organisations and supporters across the region
This commitment not only reduced the cost for families but also taught the Explorers valuable skills in teamwork, communication and community engagement.

The expedition showcased the very best of Scouting in Dudley — resilience, determination, friendship, leadership and a willingness to embrace challenge. The young people represented the district with pride, maturity and enthusiasm, and their achievements will stay with them for life.
